OUTCOMES
The vision is to create a sustainable resource-efficient industry for animal protein production based on mealworms in West Balkan countries. The goal is that PRO-SUSTAIN can facilitate Serbian and West Balkans industrial insect production over the coming years and be an enablement of new market opportunities for insects as animal feed. It is aimed to ensure that insect-based protein of high biological value is produced using the by-products of the industry (cereals, oilseed) as nutritive substrate, at the optimal farming conditions. Furthermore, the outcome of this research would also be the establishment of optimal drying and other processing technological procedures for insect-based protein to be adequately included in the animal feed formulations.
Innovation technology: Processing insect into animal feed
PRO-SUSTAIN will test sustainable nutritive substrates for mass production of edible insects. Moreover, this is aimed at improvement of nutritive quality of insect-based feed. PRO-SUSTAIN will improve the technology of insect-based feed production and the quality of the final product that is based on a circular economy.
Innovation technology: Insect mass farming
PRO-SUSTAIN will optimize the technological procedures on T. molitor and Z. morio insects that have been successfully applied for other edible insect species processing into food or feed. In doing so, it will improve the technology for insect processing into animal feed.
Innovation technology: New feeding options
Testing new insect-based animal feed in live animals (poultry) will indicate the level of its digestibility, as well as impact
on animal health and their production parameters (growth). This will also reveal the feasibility of using insect-based
feed from the aspect of economically justifiable production.
